#7 Wizard of Oz

Hello! I haven’t been on in awhile because I’m a pretty busy person! Sorry!

Anyways, about a week or two ago my brother, my mom, and I auditioned for Wizard of Oz at The Culture House and it was so much fun! We sang our songs for the directors and did a little jig afterwards. None of us got called back, which meant that we had already been cast or we didn’t get in (Which I’m pretty sure wasn’t allowed). A week after callbacks they posted the cast list! Here’s our parts:

Mom- Munchkinland Scenery, Wife in Emerald City

Brother- Munchkin, Child in Emerald City

Me- Mayor of Munchkinland, Flying Monkey, Teen in Emerald City

So, we are VERY excited about our parts, but you may be wondering… What’s Munchkinland Scenery?

Well, my friend, that is where the people are the trees blowing in the wind and the grass blowing around. If you still don’ get the picture, here’s a video that will have stuff they are doing:

So there you go!

One of my best-friends , is going to be playing Dorothy in the show, so we are VERY VERY VERY excited for her! I will be posting picture of the rehearsal process, shows, and lots of other fun stuff in the future! The shows are July 26th- July 28th… so I will be getting that beloved Facebook a day after it’s over! (because that’s my birthday)

As Mayor of the Munchkin City, In the County of the Land of Oz, I say goodbye to you most regally.

#6 Before Happily Ever After

I have recently been cast as Edmund Pevensie in “Narnia”, and I am writing this post to let my anxiety/ excitement/ and worry out.

I have approximately 130 lines/lyrics to learn in this show and I just got the script! I have been studying my lines for about a week and I have about 15 of them memorized. You see why I’m anxious and worried? The shows are on April 4th, 5th, 6th7th, and 8th. Should I try to recite my lines in order?… I think I will:

1st Line Guess: I want to go home!- Wrong   Actual Line: Who cares?

2nd Line Guess: I want to go home, to London- Half Right   Actual Line: I don’t care about windows and doors! I want to go home to London.

3rd Line Guess: I want to go home!- Right!

Okay, so I need some work… but at least I know the basic gist of things!

My feelings are mixed before every show, but this one especially because I have a major role and lots of lines, and it’s professional theatre. I am feeling excited, that I will get to share my voice with everyone and entertain people, but I’m really nervous too. My friends, family, acquaintances, and there friends and family are coming to the show, and it’s scary to perform live theatre, because if you mess up… you can’t go back and do it again, you have to improvise and fix the problem. Most of the time the audience can’t tell when an actor messes up, but sometimes, you freeze up and can’t think of anything to cover for it.

If you have any suggestions for memorizing lines quickly, or getting rid of worries and nerves, please comment!

#5 I Went to Uganda Today…

So today was pretty fun! I visited Africa, and I saw all sorts of things! When I first got there I was excited to see the hippos. But then, I saw a polar bear… RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF THIS PLACE! Everyone was crowded around him, since everyone was shocked to see a polar bear here! Anyways, lets get on with the story.

When we first got to Africa, there were birds EVERYWHERE, I recorded one in it’s usual routine, scratching it’s neck, dipping it’s head in the water, and then flapping it’s wings violently. The second we turned around all of the birds flew towards our direction and were about 2 centimeters away from our heads.  There were also white swan-like birds, and blue shiny ones with a touch of metallic orange. My favorite one was the ugly duck, because it was by itself in a little pond.

We kept walking and there were 3 cheetahs laying in the shade. They were my brothers favorite animal, so we watched them do noting for awhile. There were also giant pig things that blended in with the rocks, so I couldn’t tell what they were. We kept walking and found a deer-like creature that was the size of my dog. All of us loved the animal, because it ran around really fast away from us.

After we passed that area through Africa, we saw giant birds and a humongous tortoise. They said that the tortoise’s could grow up to be 500lbs! They did absolutely nothing. This was a much more exotic part of Africa than others. There were hippo’s, zebra’s, rhino’s, and even some cute little ferrets! The ferrets were one of my favorites because they played games with me, like peek-a-boo.

We kept walking until my brother realized we were in Uganda, and for any of you who know about Joseph Kony, this was extremely dangerous. We quickly went through Uganda, but we saw wild dogs, and baboons. Or at least I think they were baboons. We watched these baboons for awhile and as the baby was digging in the dirt, the older two were off in a corner. I started watching the older two, and one of them started sniffing the other ones bottom.  Well, I don’t think the bottom-sniff victim was to happy because he lifted his leg up, and peed all over the bottom-sniffers face. That was the highlight of my day in Africa.

Well, we survived Uganda! It was a long way back to where our group had started, and boy, had I got a work out. My legs were killing me, but we continued to see the elephants. The elephants poop was everywhere and reeked. After that was over, we continued to walk right by the polar bear, which was still in the same spot, doing the same thing. I realized that the day I thought wasn’t going to be very fun, turned out to be great! I can’t wait to go back to Africa, and maybe we could visit Australia too!

Oh, I forgot to mention… I was at the Kansas City Zoo!

#4 How I Became A Pirate

“How I Became a Pirate” is a musical about Jeremy Jacob (Jessica Jacob), finding a band of pirates washed up onto her beach.  The cast includes;

Jeremy or Jessica Jacob, the little boy/girl who the musical is centered around

Captain Braidbeard, the captain of the pirates

Swill, an intellectual pirate who gets blamed for everything that goes wrong

Sharktooth, the meanest pirate in all the seven seas… or so you think until he reveals his soft side

Max, a pirate who thinks a stuffed parrot, is a real one

Seymour Braunschwagger, Captain Braidbeards finest man

Pirate Pierre, a french pirate

Scurvy Dog, a scurvy pirate who is a dog/human mix

“How I Became a Pirate” was one of the three fall musicals at The Culture House. There were two casts for “Willy Wonka Jr.”, one being directed by Lana Jensen, and the other Micah Yantis. “How I Became a Pirate” was directed by Kelley Reitmeier, and the vocal director was Andi Fredrickson.

While I was in “How I Became a Pirate”, I played Sharktooth.  Sharktooth was a special character because of his different personalities.  The whole entire first act of the show was when Sharktooth was a bad pirate… or so everyone thought.  Right before the first act was over, Sharktooth performed his solo number “I’m Really Just a Sensitive Guy” where he explained how he had true, real feelings in life, and wasn’t just a mean pirate.

Playing Sharktooth was a lot of fun!  Rehearsals for the leads were from 5:00- 8-8:30 on Mondays and rehearsals for everyone  were on Fridays from 4:00- 8:00, at The Culture House performing arts.  Rehearsals were jam-packed with learning choreography, songs, blocking, and memorizing lines. There was a dinner break in the middle of every Friday rehearsal.  At the beginning of rehearsals, the cast of “How I Became a Pirate” and “Willy Wonka Jr.” got to eat dinner together, but due to loud talking, running around, and screaming, the casts were split up.

“How I Became a Pirate” and “Willy Wonka Jr.” were performed at YouthFront Auditorium. When you arrived at YouthFront, you have an adrenaline rush like no other.  The green room smells like hairspray and sweat, and there are people everywhere putting stage make up on and waiting for their parents to bring them food.

Here is the song I sang by myself in the show, “I’m Really Just a Sensitive Guy”:
